SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What do I wear to my first class?

It is important to wear comfortable clothing that allows free movement of the arms and legs.  All training is done bare footed so footwear during class is not required.

Ensure that all jewellery including necklaces, piercings, rings, watches etc are removed as these can cause injury to yourself or others.

When should I arrive for class?
You should ensure that you arrive early enough for class to allow you sufficient time to organise yourself prior to the class commencing at the stated time.

What do I do when I arrive for my first class?
When you arrive for your first class introduce yourself to Koochoo or the Sensei taking the class.  They will provide you with an enrolment form to be completed and returned to them prior to the commencement of the class.

What are the uniforms called?  Where do I buy one?
Our uniform, which consists of a jacket, pants and belt, is called a gi.  You can purchase your gi through the club.  Just ask Koochoo or your Sensei.

Do I need any special equipment?
As sparring forms part of some more advanced classes, students are required to wear a mouthguard and protective mitts and pads while sparring.  Protective mitts and pads can be purchased through the club.  Students are required to purchase their own mouthguards.

How are the classes structured?
Classes vary depending on the mix of the students attending the class.  However all classes begin with warm-up and stretching exercises to ensure all students' bodies are prepared for the class content.

Do you have separate classes for children, men and women?
No.  Our classes are joint classes although techniques can be customised to account for different body statures and abilities.  Self-defence is our focus, accordingly our students are exposed to working with and practicing techniques on other students of varying body stature and abilities.

How long will it take me to become a black belt?
The rate at which students progress is dictated by each individual student's own effort and understanding.  There is no set time limit for gradings.
